Healthy gums are the foundation of healthy teeth. Yet gum disease affects over 50% of adults in India, often silently progressing until significant damage has occurred. Ayurveda recognises gum health — called 'Dantamula Shotha' care — as a cornerstone of whole-body wellness, and offers a rich pharmacopoeia of proven herbal remedies.
1. Neem Gum Massage (Dantadhavana)
Neem bark powder mixed with a little sesame oil makes an exceptional gum massage paste. The tannins in neem act as astringents to tighten gum tissue, while nimbidin reduces bacterial load and inflammation. Massage gently along the gumline for 2 minutes twice daily. Clinical trials have shown neem-based gum massage to be as effective as chlorhexidine gel in reducing gingival index scores.
2. Triphala Gargling
Triphala — the combination of amla, haritaki, and bibhitaki — is one of Ayurveda's most celebrated rasayanas. A warm triphala decoction (1 tsp powder in 200ml water, strained) used as a mouth rinse has potent anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant effects. The vitamin C in amla is critical for collagen synthesis in gum tissue, making this an ideal remedy for bleeding and receding gums.
3. Clove Oil Application
Eugenol, the active compound in clove oil, is a proven anti-inflammatory and local anaesthetic used in dentistry worldwide. A tiny amount of diluted clove essential oil (2 drops in 1 tsp of coconut oil) applied to inflamed gums provides rapid pain relief and reduces bacterial populations. Use sparingly — undiluted clove oil can irritate mucous membranes.
4. Oil Pulling with Sesame or Coconut Oil
Oil pulling (Kavala Graha) involves swishing a tablespoon of warm oil in the mouth for 15–20 minutes on an empty stomach. The process mechanically removes bacteria and debris, while the oil's fatty acids disrupt bacterial cell membranes. Research published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine shows significant reductions in Streptococcus mutans counts after 10 days of oil pulling.
5. Babool (Acacia) Bark Infusion
Babool or kikar (Acacia arabica) bark is rich in tannins that make it one of the most powerful natural astringents for gum health. A decoction made by boiling babool bark in water, cooled and used as a rinse, helps reduce gum pocket depth, stop bleeding, and tighten loose gum tissue. It was the traditional remedy recommended in Charaka Samhita for gum disease.
